Directed by Philip Dunning and George Abbott. Into the s, Calleia was cast in more ethnic roles - particularly as Hispanics of various sorts.
But two roles stand out. His Buldeo in the Alexander Korda classic production of The Jungle Book was a personal favorite, a double role, as trouble-making villager and the selfsame man now old and wise telling the story to the village children as narrator.
The makeup is so good-and Calleia enjoyed character makeup-that most viewers are surprised when the old man reveals his identity.
More mainstream Hollywood was his intriguing role as Detective Obregon in Gilda He's the good guy-right? In the end he has the task, like the chorus in a Shakespearean play, to explain and summarize-perhaps not the best means of getting to the point - but that was the director's choice.
His secondary parts receded a bit into the later s and further into the s with Calleia typed to retrace former roles but giving them new nuance just the same.
He has little more than a cameo as Indian chief Cuyloga-Native American chiefs being the lot of no few elder actors in s Hollywood - in the otherwise worthwhile Disney adaptation of The Light in the Forest Calleia ventured into the TV briefly about that time.
But also from that year was another of his favorite roles. It borders on the uneven but is so off-the-wall that one cannot help watching and thoroughly enjoying all the antics of Welles still brilliant film techniques: shadow and light, wild camera angles, gringos playing Mexicans- Charlton Heston is a wow and stained darker than necessary-and over-the-top performances with veteran dramatis personae like Marlene Dietrich , Akim Tamiroff , Calleia, of course, and Welles himself looking like a police captain from skid row and using that funny character voice of his that pops up in his films as an aside.
Calleia, with white hair, is tired old cop Sergeant Menzies, long associate of Welles' seedy character. Doing what he has always done, covering up and running interference, in the end Menzies has to face the truth about his crooked captain.
Calleia enjoyed the role as going so against his usual type - showing a man harried by his past and haunted by dirty secrets - vulnerable - and very human.
It's a great part. By Calleia walked away - or, that is - sailed away from Hollywood. He returned to his native Malta for a well deserved retirement.
The Maltese had followed the career of their native son, and he had made several visits during his film career.
He traveled to the United States in Calleia began his stage career on Armistice Day. He earned his living stoking the furnace at a department store, and got a night job washing and repairing New York City streetcars.
By day he haunted theatrical booking offices. Savage agency sent Calleia to Denver, where he made his stage debut singing in the chorus of Jerome Kern 's musical comedy Have a Heart.
He understudied all of the parts and appeared as a Mexican peon who played the guitar and sang a song called "Adelai". After four months the show closed and Calleia visited Malta, where he and his father reconciled.
At his father's request he began using his real surname, and was billed as Joseph Spurin-Calleia. While he was waiting for the elaborate production to be mounted he sold pianos, with such success that the store owner offered him a store of his own if he would stay.
A succession of acclaimed performances in successful Broadway plays followed, including a shiftless newspaper reporter in The Front Page , a convicted murderer in The Last Mile , and the sinister chauffeur in Grand Hotel I fell in love with him as a ten-year-old boy.
I saw him in a play in New York [c] He had the leading role, and I never forgot him. And through the years I'd seen him in movies—little things.
And I could never forget that performance of his. He's always played very stereotyped parts in pictures but is one of the best actors I've ever known.
I have such respect for him. You play next to him and you just feel the thing that you do with a big actor—this dynamo going on. Naming the theatre's villain of the year for , nationally syndicated columnist Paul Harrison of the Newspaper Enterprise Association selected "Joseph Spurin-Calleia, whose gangster role in Small Miracle provided one of the finest of all performances on Broadway.
Calleia had his first real role as a heavy in Small Miracle , and his success in the play was responsible for his move to Hollywood.
Calleia excelled as the villain in films, but he wanted to create characters with some sympathy. I enjoy roles where I get slapped around a bit.
It's far more stimulating to play a character that isn't all one thing—not all bad and not all good. Calleia continued to battle typecasting , turning down well-paying villainous roles to develop more complex characters.
Calleia was announced to star as Father Damien in an RKO picture to be written and directed by Farrow, but the project was not realized.
Calleia became a naturalized citizen of the United States in November The house where he was born was destroyed in ; his family took refuge underground, in ancient catacombs , during the near-constant aerial bombing of Malta by the Axis powers that continued for more than two years.
On the 20,mile trip Calleia and his small troupe entertained service personnel in Natal , Dakar , along the coast to Casablanca and across to Tunis before going to Malta, which Calleia had not visited since They gave two shows a day and visited all of the hospitals at each stop; and they presented six shows in Malta as part of the exchange program between US and British entertainment units.
In addition to working steadily in motion pictures for another 20 years, Calleia also starred in the London stage premiere of Arthur Miller 's Tony Award -winning play All My Sons , receiving unanimous critical acclaim.
Calleia's haunted features figure more and more prominently on screen as the truth about Quinlan increasingly dawns on him, along with the knowledge that he must betray him.
Calleia's abundant inner life casts a growing spell over the film as it comes to its climax, bringing to vividly personal life Welles's sempiternal subject: betrayal.
Calleia retired in to Sliema , Malta. Calleia was posthumously honored by the Malta postal authority with a set of two commemorative stamps issued in From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Saqqajja was historically part of Rabat but in recent history is officially part of Mdina; see also Melite ancient city. Calleia sang, performed a scene from Small Miracle —"and I closed the show with a burlesque striptease.
That was the toughest part of the show. It gets awful cold in North Africa. She died in Sliema, Malta, on December 17, The New York Times.
